Ss Peter and Paul – 28th June 2026
Dear brothers and sisters,
Today is a great feast day for the whole Church. We celebrate Saints Peter and Paul, the two great pillars of the Christian faith. Throughout the centuries, millions of believers have looked to them as two bright stars guiding the Church on her journey through history.
It is remarkable to see how different these two men were. Peter was a simple fisherman from Galilee, generous in heart but sometimes impulsive. Paul was an educated man, trained in the best schools of his time. Peter followed Jesus from the beginning of his public ministry. Paul, on the other hand, persecuted the Church before his conversion. Yet God united them in the same mission and in the same love for Christ.
Through their lives, God teaches us that what matters most is not our background, our education, or even our past, but our willingness to answer his call.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples a question that echoes through the centuries and reaches each one of us: “But who do you say that I am?”
Perhaps this is the most important question God can ask a human heart. He does not ask what others think. He does not ask what the world says about him. He asks each one of us personally: “Who am I for you?” Saint Peter answers with simple and sincere faith: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
That confession changed history. Not because Peter was the wisest or the strongest of the apostles. In fact, he was a man with many weaknesses. Sometimes he was brave, sometimes afraid. He loved Jesus deeply, yet he even denied him during the hours of the Passion. And still, Jesus says to him: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.”
What a great comfort for us! God does not choose perfect people. God chooses people who are willing to be transformed by his love. He does not look only at what we are today; he sees what we can become through his grace.
